Dr. Nahro Zagros is a distinguished scholar, political analyst, and advocate for Kurdish and Iraqi interests. Born in Iraqi Kurdistan in 1974, he earned his PhD from York University in the UK. His expertise spans Middle Eastern politics, cultural anthropology, terrorism, and counter-terrorism, with a strong focus on Kurdistan’s socio-political landscape within the broader Middle Eastern context.
Currently, Dr. Zagros serves as the editor-in-chief of Kurdistan Chronicle, a widely distributed English-language magazine published in both Kurdistan and the United States. He frequently appears on international television networks as a political commentator, offering expert insights into global and regional affairs.
From 2013 to 2020, Dr. Zagros served as Vice President for Academic Affairs at Soran University, the leading university in Iraqi Kurdistan. During this time, he played a pivotal role in shaping academic policies and fostering international collaboration. As an advocate for Kurdish and Iraqi interests, he made frequent visits to the U.S. Congress and served as a senior fellow at the Gold Institute for International Strategy in Washington, D.C., as well as an advisor at the World Youth Leadership Network (WYLN) in New York.
Over the past 16 years, Dr. Zagros has advised numerous Kurdish, Iraqi and European politicians, including senior Kurdish leaders, on global and international politics, offering strategic insights into complex geopolitical challenges. Additionally, he contributed to higher education development in the region, serving for six years as a member of the Human Capacity Development Program and Quality Assurance Committee at the KRG’s Ministry of Higher Education.
Dr. Zagros is a prolific writer, contributing regularly to national and international peer-reviewed academic journals and newspapers. In 2017, his book, Iraqi Kurdistan Region: A Path Forward, was published by Johns Hopkins University Press and Brookings in Washington, D.C.
Currently based in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, Dr. Zagros continues to collaborate with think tanks and research centers across the Middle East, Europe, and the United States, further enhancing his contributions to academic and policy discussions.
